Sgt. Steve Owen

On October 5, 2016, Sergeant Steve Owen responded to a call of a burglary in progress. The burglar, Trenton Lovell, shot and disabled Sgt. Owen. The defendant then shot Sgt. Owen several times in his face as well as shot Sgt. Owen’s law enforcement badge on his shirt. The defendant also attempted to murder other deputies who responded to the scene. The defendant told paramedics he “wished his handcuffs were off so he could kill more deputies,” and later said he was “glad he killed the sergeant.” The defendant was charged with murder, Special Circumstances as well as other allegations. Gascon’s blanket Enhancement Policy would have resulted in the allegations being dismissed and allowing the defendant an opportunity for parole.
